Bombing party went out from Hammerhead to a German listening post and found that it was unoccupied – the inspiration for In No Man’s Land.

4 am left Metz and took up positions in original front line; 6.30 am moved up to original German front line; 7.15 am assembled and moved past FLESQUIERES along to LA JUSTICE. No. 4 Company extended to fill gap between 7th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and 4th Gordon Highlanders and Seaforth Highlanders and 62nd Division. Advance stopped by machine gun fire from CANTAING LINE and ANNEUX.
E Alan Mackintosh killed by a shot through the mouth. Buried at ORIVAL WOOD CEMETERY, FLESQUIERES. ​
